Chapter 11: It’s Totally Not Brainwashing

None of my fellow classmates seemed to notice that anything had happened the next morning. In fact, most of them were so cheerfully well-rested that it was all I could do not to fling something at them at breakfast.

Sanjaya slapped me on the back as he sat down next to me, “Morning Vars. You look sour this morning. Did you spend all night realizing that our project is doomed to failure and our rankings are going to bomb?”

I shot him a look, “No.”

“Oh, me neither,” He barely waited for a server to set a plate in front of him before he dug into his food, stuffing it into his mouth as if he hadn’t seen food in days.

“The project is fine,” Osmund sat down across from us. “There’s precedent for this sort of thing before…”

“Has a project sprayed a commissioned officer in the face with a noxious substance before?” Sanjaya smirked.

Osmund’s expression congealed a bit. “Well, not that I know of…”

“We’re in trouble from the get-go, and the critter probably won’t even come back, so…”

“It’s fine, Lokka will participate and our project isn’t in trouble,” I snapped. To my surprise, neither of them argued. Osmund looked relieved, as if willing to let me worry about it. Sanjaya didn’t even look rebellious, he just went back to shoveling food in his mouth as if he’d forgotten all our etiquette training.

My appetite was pretty much gone. I had to figure out what to do about the loyalty imprinting. I had to figure out what to do about Institor Dhingra. And, really, I didn’t have any time to work on it. I excused myself and stood, leaving the mess before either Osmund or Sanjaya asked any more questions.

I didn’t have to check today’s schedule to know I didn’t have much time. We controlled our schedules, for the most part, but that just meant I’d arranged for my team’s simulator and discussion times along with the other team leaders from our Flight.

I had five days to figure things out, and I had something over thirty hours of simulator time this week, plus another ten hours of lecture and discussion time and another five hours of scheduled lab-work. I’d already put another two hours every day on the schedule for working on our Second Year Project.

Five days, and two and a half of that is already occupied. I had to be alert to all the eyes focused on me right now. Institor Dhingra would be watching me. Dekkas Richardson must be watching me, with how he’d been waiting for me in the common room. My fellow Initiates were watching me, not just from my Flight but from others. My standing, my position here, made me a target and if they saw a way to knock me down, they would. If they see weakness, they’ll move in.

All of that considered, I should have remained at breakfast, should have seemed every bit as confident as I could. But I was tired, I was worried, and, at least inside where I could admit it, I was scared.
